49: The Recognition

Thanks to the way i removed every traces of hair on my face, i was the perfect Interpol with dark sunglasses.

“I can give you Ten thousand Brother, please help me. I will stop the business, i swear” She was still crying.

“Fine. The only thing that will make me listen to you now is that you promised to stop that business. You are still a young lady, find something legal to do because if you continue, you will get into trouble again” i said as she got up and stood beside me.

I brought out my phone again and pretended to have dialed some numbers, then i said into the phone, “Stand aside and wait for me in the car”.

“Thank you sir. I will call my friend to come with the money now, she is in Strasbourg” Tina said.

“You better call her immediately because, we are traveling back to Paris tonight” I said.

Tina fumbled in her bag and brought out her phone, then she made a call instructing someone to bring €10,000 down to Mulhouse immediately.

I made another deceitful call, telling no one in Particular to drive to the Euroairport and wait for me there.

“We are going to wait for your friend in a hotel room. We need to talk more because as a fellow Nigerian, i want to advice you on the dangers of human trafficking” I said as we walked outside.

I made the sign of the cross like someone who just finished praying as we walked past the church Curator who looked at me and wondered if i knew what i was doing. The church wasn’t Catholic, it was a Protestant Church established to counter some of the Catholic doctrines.

We got out to the road and took a cab to a hotel near the major road.

I paid €55 and we waited in the room while we talked.

“Listen carefully Tina, at 28. And with a permanent resident permit in France, you can go back to School. By the time you get to 32, you must have learnt something to make you understand this planet better. Knowledge is power. The kind of job you do here in this country is destroying the image of Nigeria in Europe. The government are very serious to stop that. If not that you are still a young lady, i would have rejected your ten thousand Euros offer and send you back to Abuja where you will be locked up for three months before your charges comes up. You could have been the 5th person we are sending back to Nigeria from Europe. We have also thrown one of you to prison in Sweden and she will still be deported to Abuja after serving her jail term here. There are other things to do here apart from selling your bodies” I said.

“Brother it is just that that is the only thing we know here in Europe. I was brought here by my own Madam who made sure i paid over sixty thousand Euros before she let me go” she said.

“What is the name of that your Madam and where does she live?” i asked.

“She died of AIDS four years ago and she lived in Rome” she said quietly.

“You mean she died of AIDS and yet you continue staying in the street to the extent of bringing another woman’s daughter here?” i shouted. My Madam slept with a dog in Italy when she was still working in the street. She told us about it when she was very sick in the hospital. She suspected she contacted the disease from the dog and warned us never to do that nomatter how much we were offered” Tina said.

“Wait a moment, what if you were tricked into believing that you were going to sleep with a human being and ended up meeting a dog in the room?” i asked.

“God will never allow that to happen to his children” he said.

I shook my head in disbelief and stared at her for a very long time.
I was hoping to tap into that round small waist of hers but the moment she talked about sleeping with a dog, i was put off permanently.

As i sat there, i wondered if Maria also slept with a dog. There was nothing those Edo girls won’t do just to make money. Money they would leave behind and die someday. No wonder it was called the root of all evil.

We both drank from the bottle of JW i bought outside until the girl with the money located our hotel.

As soon as she came to the hotel, i told Tina we were going.

We met her at the reception where she handed the envelop containing the cash to me. I opened and checked to make sure it was real money. I didn’t bother to count them because even if it was not complete; i wouldn’t care.

There was a danger alert in my head; the girl who brought the money from Strasbourg looked familiar. I thought i have seen her somewhere in the past. Perhaps it was the dark sunglasses and the new haircut style that prevented her from recognizing me. As a result, i decided to be walking behind them as we headed towards the road.

“Channel, are we sleeping here or going back to Strasbourg, he paid for a night here and i think he won’t stay” Tina asked her friend.

Channel! The name rang a bell instantly. That was her, the girl who once gave me Esther’s phone number when she was sent to Milan by her Madam.
What a small Europe. I had always known that the Edo girls in Western Europe were all connected somehow but i never thought someone who knew me would be involved in an operation i was doing with just a single person.

The next thing on my mind was how to discharge the girls immediately. Going back to the hotel won’t be ideal since they might come back there as well. It was better that we settle whatever comes up out there in the open. It was already getting very dark anyway.

“What about Sandra?” Tina suddenly asked.

“She is locked up at the embassy. I am going to sign her release papers when i get back to Paris but please make sure you remove her from the street because if i manage to catch her again, she will be deported.

As soon as i mentioned that Sandra be removed from the street, Channel turned and looked at me while pointing her finger.

“Wait, are you not Solomon? The guy who called me one day in a hotel near La Defense and paid me to give you Esther’s phone number when she was sent to Milan?” She said as we walked out to the road.

I quickened my pace.
