Sky Sports secured two major prizes at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards ceremony in London with Gary Neville among the winners for a second straight year.
Neville was named Best Sports Presenter, Commentator or Pundit, with Sky Sports’ coverage of the 2014 Ryder Cup winning the award for Best Sports Programme.
Former Manchester United and England defender Neville joined Sky at the start of the 2011-12 season and won the award for his work on Monday Night Football, beating off competition from the BBC’s Gary Lineker and Hazel Irvine.
Speaking about the award, the judges praised Neville, saying: “Gary showed insight, strategic knowledge and a mission to explain.”
On receiving the award, Neville said: “I’d like to thank the Royal Television Society and everyone at Sky, especially the football production team at Sky Sports.
“It’s a big honour for me to win this award and I accept it on behalf of our production team who work so hard and make it easy for those of us front of house including Jamie Carragher, Ed Chamberlin and myself to deliver great football shows.”
Sky Sports’ coverage of Europe’s Ryder Cup victory at Gleneagles beat competition from the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup clash between Germany v Brazil as well as their work at the British Grand Prix.
Speaking about the award, the judges said: “Sky Sports’ 2014 Ryder Cup had it all: an approach that took the audience to the heart of the event, a commentary team of unrivalled expertise and a production that was perfectly placed to showcase the great sporting drama.”
Collecting the award, executive producer of golf on Sky Sports, Jason Wessely said: “First of all, I’d like to thank the RTS for this award. It is a great honour for Sky Sports to be recognised for our production of the 2014 Ryder Cup, in a category with so many other worthy nominations.
“Thanks also our valued production partner European Tour Productions for their fantastic support and World Feed coverage.
“And finally, a special thanks to the European Tour itself, which provided such a wonderful location and yet another compelling Ryder Cup storyline, making it such a pleasure and a privilege to broadcast to the TV audience.
