Football: Kaveh’s Liverpool tour latest

Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol reports from Boston where man-of-the-moment Steven Gerrard is training with Liverpool’s new-look squad…
They say all farewells should be sudden. It was business as usual at Liverpool’s temporary training ground in Boston on Monday. But just before 3pm UK time a whisper began to go around that a big announcement was on the way.
The captain of England would be retiring from international football. The news would be announced by the FA in seconds.
Ten minutes later Steven Gerrard stepped off the Liverpool coach and walked slowly onto the training pitch at Harvard Business School. About 50 Liverpool fans had gathered at the gate to chant his name. He waved, changed into his football boots and then got back to doing what he does best.
The morning session was all about fitness work. Brendan Rodgers wasn’t here because he had been laid low with a virus back at the team hotel. Everyone else was ready for hard work under the hot Boston sun.
New signings Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert were getting their first taste of a high-profile pre-season tour with one of the biggest clubs in the world.
More new faces are on the way. Loic Remy arrived at the Liverpool team hotel on Monday night, ready for his medical and Belgium striker Divock Origi is on his way too.
Dejan Lovren may have to wait a little longer to complete his dream move from Southampton. There is a quiet confidence here though that his transfer will be completed before the window closes.
It’s not all about arrivals. More players will be leaving Liverpool this summer. Fabio Borini trained here despite Sunderland’s attempts to sign him on a permanent deal. Pepe Reina, who many had thought had played his last game for Liverpool, was training again with the goalkeepers after his loan spell at Napoli.
The focus though was on the captain. The man who has played for only one club.
It is fair to say that Liverpool were proud of the fact that Gerrard was the England captain. It is also fair to say that his retirement from international football will prolong his career and boost Liverpool’s chances home and abroad next season.
