Football: Besiktas v Arsenal preview

posted in: News | 0

Arsenal take on Besiktas in Istanbul in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie on Tuesday.
Arsenal overcame Turkish opposition in the play-offs last year when they thumped Fenerbahce 5-0 and they will be hoping for a similar outcome against Besiktas.
Arsenal will be without defender Kieran Gibbs (hamstring) for the trip to Turkey.
Gibbs could face a spell on the sidelines after suffering the injury in last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace with Nacho Monreal expected to start at left back.
Centre-back Laurent Koscielny has shrugged off an Achilles problem and midfielder Mathieu Flamini returns after missing the win over Crystal Palace, but forward Yaya Sanogo (hamstring) did not travel.
German World Cup winners Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski are all not yet to be involved, while goalkeeper David Ospina (thigh), Theo Walcott and Serge Gnabry (both knee) continue their rehabilitation.
Former Everton and West Ham defender Slaven Bilic will be hoping to plot the downfall of Arsenal after leading Besiktas to runners-up spot in his first season in charge.
Besiktas go into the game fresh, having not played at the weekend and they will be hoping to gain a positive result to take into the second leg at the Emirates.
Former Chelsea and Newcastle striker Demba Ba, who scored a hat-trick in the last round against Feyenoord, will lead the line for Besiktas after joining the club from Chelsea earlier this summer.
Another former Chelsea man Gokhan Tore is doubtful for the game as he is short of match fitness, while Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson is rated 50-50 with a hamstring strain.
