In the evening of that Sunday, i called a cab and went to Jennifer’s place in Charlottenburg area of Berlin. Kenneth had requested that he go with me but since it was a visit to a white man, it would be better if i go alone. According to Jennifer, she had told her husband that i was coming alone and that was what i was expected to do. Charlottenburg was an area that was inhabited by the rich and middle class Germans. The style of the houses there were very different from what obtained in other areas. The only foreigners who lived there were footballers and some American basketball players.
I got to the address she sent me and the first thing i observed in the street was that it was unusually quiet. The area where Africans lived were always noisy.
I stood in front of the dwarf gate and called her. A minute late, her husband came out and opened the door for me.
“Hello Sir, nice to have you in our place” Mr. Max Schneider said while shaking my hand.
“Thanks, how is your wife doing?” i asked since there wasn’t anything to discuss with him yet.
He said his wife was fine. We walked into the already open door and entered a massively furnished sitting room with grey leather seats and a large television hanging on the wall.
“Have a seat Sir, she will be with you in a minute” Max said.
I sat on a long sofa watching football game while Max took the small stairs and went up.
The house was a one-storey duplex. It was the same style of houses built around that area. Without being told, the place was not for the poor immigrants like us.
“Thanks for coming” The voice said from a veranda above my head; it was Jennifer. I smiled since there wasn’t anything else to say. A minute later, she came down with her son and sat beside me.
“Go to another seat, you don’t need to sit very close to me because you are married now” i said with a smile on my face.
“Its Ok, my husband knew everything to be known about you. I have already told him how i came to Europe and what i was doing in Portugal before you arrived there. He already knew what we went through running away from my madam and how we eventually came to Germany. He had been looking forward to meeting you but unfortunately i didn’t have your phone number. I told him how you sent money to me from different people while you never called. He was very excited when i told him that you may be coming for our marriage ceremony” she said.
“Fine then. We didn’t get enough chance to talk yesterday. How have you and the baby been all these while?” i asked.
Jennifer said they have been very fine since she met Max at the Aldi supermarket near Berlin Spandau. She had purchased some items and when she got to the counter, her money wasn’t complete. She had been told to drop a bar of chocolate when the man standing behind her asked that he paid for the chocolate. They had got talking outside the supermarket and eventually exchanged numbers. Two days later, she had been invited to a restaurant in Zoo Garden area where they introduced themselves properly. It was at the restaurant that she told Max how she came to Germany and how she got pregnant for her ex boyfriend who abandoned her to her fate. She also told Max how i sent her money regular from different parts of Europe without talking to her. She narrated to him how the money despite not being enough, helped her.
After the meeting at the restaurant, Max had taken her to his house and they spent the entire day until she left in the evening. From then on, they had met regularly at different places and gone to movies together. Max had taken the responsibilities of taking care of her and the child. He had also asked to talk to me sometimes but nobody knew where i was and my phone number. She had asked Ify for my number many times but she had always denied having it. Joe and Johnson also denied having my phone numbers. She had called my elder brother in Nigeria who also denied having my number. She wanted to share the good news with me because according to her, he would not have met Max if not that i brought her to Germany.
“My house rent expired after sometimes last year and when i told Max about it, he asked me to move in with him; that was how i came here” she said and smiled.
“How many rooms are here in this house?” i asked, trying to change the direction of the emotional story.
“Four, three rooms upstairs and a room with the sitting room down here” she said.
“Cool, may be i will take one room and live here with you and Max” i said.
She smiled and said she was going to tell Max but assured me that he would agree.
“No, i am joking. Soldiers don’t live in the same houses with married couple” I said and smiled.
I continued, “I am very happy for you Jennifer. Atleast i am not going to send money to you again. What does your husband do?”
He is a footballer with a Union Berlin, a second division football club here in Berlin” she said.
“Wow, that is very good. It means that he has money. He must be earning not less than €20,000 every month” i said.
“I don’t know how much he earns and i don’t care. I am just happy that he came into my life when i thought it was over. There was a time i thought about killing myself. It was when you returned to Germany and saw me with my pregnancy. It was very difficult to bear; i thought about ending my life. I cried day and night but when you started sending me money, i saw some hope again. I dreamt that you would return to me someday since Nigerian men hardly give women money without other motives” She said and we laughed together.
“It was the reason why i cried when you called. I knew i made a mistake in the past but i loved you so much. I had hoped that you won’t find out what i did but then i got pregnant and everything crashed”
“Everything didn’t crash. What happened was that it was the pregnancy that led you to Max who i believe will take good care of you. Like i said earlier, i am very happy for you and your kid. I will be fine” I said.
“Life is the art of being well deceived; and in order that the deception may succeed it must be habitual and uninterrupted“
